Many young Russians OK with immorality – poll

Release Date: Mon 17th Nov 08

Yevgeny Yureyev, the head of the public council of the Central Federal District claimed that one-third to half of young Russians do not consider prostitution, infidelity and abortion to be immoral.

A survey, carried out by the Sociology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, states that 55% of young people in Russia would be ready, “to overstep moral norms to achieve success,” Yuryev said.

In the State Duma meeting Yuryev alleged that Russia is the world’s leading country in the number of abortions, abandoned children, and deaths due to alcohol abuse. The survey showed that between 30% to 50% of young people in Russia do not believe that prostitution, personal enrichment  at the expense of others, rudeness, dinking, bribery, abortion, infidelity, or the public expression of dislike of other ethnicities are unacceptable.

In the year 2000, the European Values Study estimated that Russian attitudes towards abortion were somewhat more relaxed that those in the UK or Germany. In Europe, citizens of Denmark and Slovenia are most tolerant regarding abortion. The strongest attitudes against abortion are held by Malta citizens.

Russian attitudes towards lying when it is in your own interested were also more relaxed than those in Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands. Again Malta tops the league in terms of alleged moral behaviour when it comes to being honest.
